This product really is the Dogs' when it comes to engine building. It is a non-hardening jointing compound, which is fine with higher temperatures making it suitable for the vast majority of applications on both classic and modern, air cooled and water cooled motorcycle engines and gear boxes. It was originally developed by Rolls Royce and is now made under licence. It is in it's element for joining the crankcases where there is not usually a gasket. It doesn't block oilways and is easy to use. We usually paint it on with cheap artists paint brushes which we buy from the cheapo supermarkets.
Especially with classic bikes, we tend to paint all mating surfaces with Wellseal, even when using gaskets. We even use it on head gaskets. It is a bit belt and braces, but you're far less likely to get an oil leak if you apply Wellseal as well as the gasket.
We don't tend to recommend the tubes as once opened, the stuff escapes out of the top and all over the shelf it's stored on - no idea why and loads of the stuff is sold in tubes. We prefer the tins which are far easier to use. We'll sell you tins or tubes - your choice!
Sadly the manufacturer of this product has stopped supplying the tins. We have explained our experiences to makers of this fine product and they will hopefully take our comments on board - watch this space!
