We have used tank protectors in our workshop ever since they were invented. It's so easy to drop a tool, part or corossive fluid on the tank and this gives the paint work a far better chance of survival. It won't stop a 4 pound lump hammer dropped from six feet, but a small hand tool slipping from your hand will not scratch paint of you have a tank protector. We leave them on all bike tanks parted in our workshop all the time

Underneath it has an anti-slip cushion material and on top an easy wipe clean nylon surface. It makes no difference what the tank it made of it still offers great protection from accidental scratches and spillages, particularly brake fluid splashes.

D-Synch Vacuum Analyser

D-Synch Vacuum Analyser

This is more, much more, than a PC based vacuum gauge set.

The software runs on a standard Windows PC and shows a huge amount of data gleaned from intake vacuum measurements. It displays the average vacuum on a bar chart for carb/throttle body balancing but also plots the vacuum on a graph against time from which you can detect issues such as leaking inlet rubbers as well as poor seating of exhaust and inlet valves. If you really read up on the significance of the graph traces you can identify more complex issues with the carbs/throttle bodies.

Each cylinder is given a colour, No 1 Black, 2 Green, 3 Red and 4 Yellow making it easier to distinguish between the graph traces. The software is easy to use and provides a plethora of data including minimum and maximum vacuum for each inlet as well as average figures. One can switch on and off inputs in the software to get a clearer look at individual cylinders.
The software will record a diagnostic session which can be played back at any time for reappraisal or just to impress your mates down the pub. The recorded session can be played back as though it were a master video with full functionality ie you can turn on and off channels zoom in etc.

For simply balancing carburetors or throttle bodies it makes life very easy. As with any vacuum analysing tool you connect the pipes to the intake outlets which are sometimes on the carbs or little stub pipes on the inlet rubbers as in the case of Kawasaki's mighty Z1 series bikes. The little black box is then plugged into the USB port of your Windows laptop and the software is easily downloaded from the website and installed. I am very reluctant and impatient when it comes to learning new software, but fortunately this is so easy to use I found a bit of poking here and there with a mouse and all was working without resorting to a manual. When balancing carbs/throttle bodies the bar graph background turns green when they are well within tolerance which makes it so easy.

This is very affordable timing light for those who only want to set up the odd bike. It is not at the same level as the Gunson versions, but is much cheaper to buy and can be used to dynamically time a bike engine.

We would be hard pushed to exaggerate the pros of this tool! The only downside is the price - it's not cheap! We have been using this tool in our workshop and it has paid for itself over and over again!

In static mode it measures the vacuum in the carb intakes or throttle bodies (in the case of fuel injection), and allows you to easily balance the carbs / throttle bodies so much more quickly and more accurately than with standard vacuum gauges. Since the demise of mercury manometers, when the nanny state took them away cos mercury is poisonous, we had never seen anything that impressed us ... until we found this tool at a trade show and were blown away. When balancing carbs/throttle bodies it's fairly important to have the tickover as specified and with the flick of a switch you have a very accurate tacho!.

The biggest bonus however is the ability to measure dynamic intake vacuum. In Dynamic mode you measure the peaks and troughs of the whole cycle, instead of just the average vacuum level. This is displayed in an LED 'bar chart' across all four cylinders and will indentify leaks on the induction side and leaking valves on either inlet or exhaust. We have found this feature invaluable when working with classic bikes. This tool's so much more than posh vacuum gauge set. VacuumMate has an internal battery and can run on either that or you can feed the tool from the bike battery with the supplied lead and clips, which also charges the internal battery.

VacuumMate is a very well built, waterproof tool designed for a long life. It come is a well made carrying case with loads of adapters. It is worth every penny of it's price.

This is the only sensible way to oil control cables.

The tool's rubber boot with the small end grips the inner wire of the cable whilst the outter is gripped by the other end. The screw is tightened up which ensures a seal around both ends. The straw of your lightweight oil aerosol (WD40 or equivilent) is pushed into the small hole in the bottom of the tool. When the button on the aerosol is pressed oil is forced into the void between the inner and outer parts of the cable. Keep going until oil is seen dribbling out the other end. Remove the tool and pull the inner cable in and out a bit. Job Done!

This is a very well made oil pan. We have been using this model for some years in our own workshop and it has been great. It's really well made, is shallow enough to get under all the bikes we've worked on, including our Harleys and has a really useful rolled edge which means the oil tends to stay in it when you move it around, rather than jumping out. It has handles front and back, which makes life easy when dragging it out from some low to the ground cruiser.

Although it's a bit of a fag, we always clean it out when we've tipped the contents out. This isn't because we're really tidy (those who've seen our videos know better :) ), but you should always drain a sump into a clean tray, so that you can see if there is any crap in the oil; if your oil pan is already filled with foreign objects you won't know if they're from your bike or just general workshop shi...detritus.

This is a tool we have only just discovered ourselves; and we are bowled over by it. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means that it absorbs water. If it has more than a few percent of water it should be changed. But how do you tell? Obviously with one of these testers! If in doubt change it; it's not that expensive. Water in the brake fluid will corrode the working parts of your braking system, which isn't a good thing! The most common problem is that the aluminium of the caliper, behind the piston seal corrodes and pushes the seal too tightly against the piston which means that you need more pressure to move the piston against the pads. This effectively reduces your braking efficiency and will eventually sieze the caliper altogether. Another issue with water in the fluid is that as the brakes are applied the friction makes them heat up and as water only reaches 100°C before boiling, the water in the fluid turns into steam making the fluid compressible and further reducing the efficiency of the brakes. As bikers, we are vulnerable enough at the hands of car drivers who seem hell bent on killing us off as a race, without having iffy brakes!

This is another of those tools that you rarely use, but when you do need it there really is no substitute. When fitting exhaust components they are very often a bit tight, especially when they've been on the bike a long time.
